Basic Computer Competencies

Operating System

· Use the mouse to click, right click, and drag

· Correct way to insert a diskette into a floppy drive

· Protection of diskette and creating backup files

· Correct procedure to shutdown, and /or restart the computer

· Copy files, move files, delete files, create subdirectories

· Keyboarding skills (become familiar with the layout of a standard keyboard and use keys to enter text, delete text, to move the cursor around the screen, control alt delete, spacebar, page down/up, and numeric keypad).

Word Processing Application Program

· Start and exit application files

· Create, open, and save application files

· Perform basic editing and format functions: moving the cursor, spell/grammar checks, thesaurus

· Save and print a file

Internet

· Send, receive, and forward electronic mail

· Manage an email account

· Create and receive email attachments

· Be knowledgeable of and demonstrate email netiquette, understand that email has limited privacy

· · Use a web browsing application by entering URLs (specific to Sinclair), adding and using bookmarks, saving web pages, viewing html files on hard drive

Ethics of Computer Use

· Sinclair Honor Code (to be implemented and integrated in the future)

· Discuss issues of privacy and net etiquette

· Acceptable uses of SCC computing resources

· Copyright issues related to computer software
