CAPÍTULO 13

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GUSTAR

THE VERB GUSTAR does not change depending on the person doing the liking.

The words yo, tú, Ud., él, and ella aren't used with the verb in the same way as

other verbs.  Think about the following sentences:

            S V    ADJ         PREP                           S        V         O

1.         I am interested in art.                2.         Art interests me.

I and me are very different words, although they still refer to the person who is

saying the sentence.

Most sentences we will use in Spanish are like the 1st sentence above.

              S        V         PRED

            Yo       soy       Juan.

            Ella se llama      Lupe

GUSTAR is like the 2nd sentence, only backwards!

IO                    V                           S

Me                   gusta                el futból.

To me              is pleasant         soccer.

The person pleased is indicated first, then the thing that does the pleasing.

A mí me gusta ______ = ______ is pleasing to me

A tí te gusta ______ = ______ is pleasing to you (my friend)

A Ud. le gusta ______ = ______ is pleasing to you (formal)

A nosotros nos gusta ______ = ______ is pleasing to us

A ellas les gusta ______ = ________ is pleasing to them (that group of females)

Plural objects make GUSTAR plural also.

A mí me gustan ______ = ______ are pleasing to me

A tí te gustan ______ = ______ are pleasing to you (my friend)

A Ud. le gustan ______ = ______ are pleasing to you (formal)

A nosotros nos gustan ______ = ______ are pleasing to us
