I. Course Emphasis
Unity of Life: Cells are the basic structural units of
organisms and they require mater and
energy to function.
Continuity of Life: Life continues by genetic
material passed on through generations by
reproduction.
II. Course Requirements
A. Reading of text. Students are
expected to read the textbook chapters either before or after they are
covered in lecture.
B. Laboratory. All students are
required to register for and participate fully in BIO 117, the laboratory
program that
is an integral part of this course. Two "practical exams" will be
given on the dates listed
in the
syllabus to test your mastery of the skills and concepts presented in lab.
C. Tests. Four tests consisting of
objective items will be administered on the dates listed in the Tentative
Schedule.
III. Grading
Grades will be based on the following: Grading Scale:
4 lecture tests (100 points each) -- 400
points
A = 100 - 90
2 lab test (50 points each) -------- 100
points
B = 89 - 80
C = 79- 70
D 69 - 60
F = 59 - 0
There are no provisions for earning extra credit. However, the lecture
tests may include
some short-answer essay or problem-solving bonus items which, if answered
correctly, can improve
your
test score. Such bonus questions often require critical thinking or problem
solving skills.
IV. Attendance:
Regular attendance is expected of all
students! Classes start promptly on time, and
attendance is checked at the beginning of
the period. Attendance records are kept on file;
irregular attendance could result in a
student being denied future financial assistance or
continuation in certain Sinclair programs.
Absences due to illness or emergencies should be
reported directly to me. If you arrive late
to class it is your responsibility to notify me to
correct the attendance record. Habitual tardiness
or leaving class early is disruptive and
discourteous. Most important – be in class,
be on time, stay until dismissal, and
participate fully.
V. Testing Policy:
All students are expected to take lecture and lab tests
at the time they are scheduled.
In the event, some extenuating circumstance
prevents you from taking a scheduled test, you
must make it up as soon as possible. To make up a
test, you may schedule an appointment
with the Testing Center in Room 10-445. To make an
appointment call 512-3076. A
student may take only one test per quarter in the
Testing Center.
VI. Study Suggestions:
Have a great experience in this class!
